Magnetic Island

My new novel THEIR ISLAND HOME is set on Magentic Island. North Queenslanders, particularly those of us living in Townsville, all know how lucky we are to have  this beautiful island just offshore – a popular holiday destination for a day, a weekend or for several weeks – and a mere twenty minute ferry ride away. Of course, many lucky ducks also live there.

This island is famous for its natural beauty, the green tree covered hills, the many bright blue bays divided by rocky headlands crested by majestic hoop pines.

Whether you like to swim, to snorkel, paddle board, follow hiking trails or simply relax in a beautiful natural space, there’s something for everyone on this island.

Here are just a few of the fun things you can do on this island.

Hike The Forts Walk: Walk this historic WWII trail early in the morning to beat the heat and spot wild koalas in the trees.

Sunset Cruise: Sip and sail at twilight, watching the beautiful sunset spread across the sky.

Koala and Wildlife Park: (in Horseshoe Bay where much of the story is set). You’ll see koalas, wombats, pythons, lizards, turtles, and baby crocodiles and there’s an option to take a 2-hour interactive wildlife tour are led by rangers.

Hire a topless car: fun way to get around the island to all the various bays and sights.

Alma Bay: often a favourite spot on Magnetic Island with its lovely shady picnic area and the bay perfect for swimming.

    1. LOL. Yes, Cindy, I fear it might be too hot for a Taswegian – although you might manage it in winter, the perfect time to visit.
